JDM ASSOCIATES LIMITED 1984 - PRESENT
Chairman
Founder of the company and major shareholder of Sportline
Group of companies, with headquarters in Hong Kong, established as the leading
distributor of sports and leisure merchandise in Hong Kong.
- Conceived, negotiated the concept with PRC authorities
and stage-managed the relocation and setting up of a highly specialised plant
from the UK to Guangzhou for the manufacture of feather shuttlecocks on behalf
of Reinforced Shuttlecocks Limited, a UK market leader.
- Enabled Reinforced Shuttlecocks Limited and their subsidiary
DSI, the market leader in Denmark to stay in business when the group was not able
to secure regular supply of goose feathers, by moving their plant adjacent to
the source of raw material (goose feather) in Guangzhou.
- Appointed regional business and marketing consultant to
Wilson Sporting Goods Company of Chicago, US. Increased their market share and
profitability throughout the Far East. Started up Sportline Limited to handle
distribution in Hong Kong and Macau, which has enjoyed 25% per annum compound
growth.
- Appointed marketing consultant to the Wing On Group in
Hong Kong. Assisted to set up a tennis ball manufacturing facility. Recommended
the group to upgrade the "Aeroplane" tennis ball plant in Shanghai and the total
negotiation for the purchase, shipment and reinstalled a complete tennis ball
plant from the UK to Hong Kong.
- Appointed marketing consultant to Holeproof Menswear Division
of Pacific Dunlop Limited. Assisted launch of a new garment product into the Hong
Kong market as a spearhead of a planned strategic expansion in the Far East.
- Assisted The Associated OCTEL Company Limited, a UK based
consortium of leading oil companies manufacturing TEL-antiknock compound, to develop
their sales to the PRC. á Recommended change in representation and updated their
marketing strategy. Negotiated with the head office of Sino Petroleum International
(Sinopec) in Beijing, which has an annual turnover in excess of US$20m per annum.
SPORTLINE LIMITED GROUP 1984-1998
Chairman
Sportline Limited is the parent company of a private limited
group of companies established in Hong Kong since 1984, and was effectively a
partnership between perhaps the two best known names in the sporting goods industry
in Hong Kong - Jock Mackie and Bob Ahluwalia.
Sportline Limited was originally founded to handle the Wilson
Agency in Hong Kong and Macau, but with the International connections of the two
principal shareholders, soon acquired additional agencies.
The Sportline Group consist of: Sportline Ltd - Hong Kong
Golf Specialists Pacific Ltd - Hong Kong - a newly formed company which holds
the Titleist and Foot-Joy Agencies for Hong Kong, Macau and the PRC with effect
from 1 January 1996 Sportworld (Pacific) Ltd - a BVI company held through Horwath
Ltd (nominees in Hong Kong) which holds the Titleist and Foot-Joy Agencies for
the Philippines. á The Sportline Group was sold to the public listed company SAS
Dragon Ltd in 1998.
ROBERTSON, WILSON & COMPANY LIMITED 1976-1984
Regional Group Chairman
Acquired 100% of the equity in Robertson, Wilson and Company
Ltd Hong Kong from Hutchison Whampoa, as a vehicle to develop his interest and
belief in the growth and opportunities in the sports and leisure related industries
in the Far East.
- Rapidly expanded the marketing and distribution base and
secured AMF Head, Foot-Joy, Hogan and Voit, Slazenger, a market leader, Jantzen
and Simpson as agents for the Hong Kong market.
- Established subsidiary companies with third party minority
interests in Singapore, Malaysia and Taiwan with the same agencies in Hong Kong.
Obtained, developed and secured Nike which was made a market leader from scratch
in Singapore and Malaysia.
- Established a sports surface company, International Systems
Limited in Hong Kong which became a market leader, featuring in major sports facilities
such as the Jubilee Sports Center, Aberdeen Marina and the Hong Kong Country Club.
- Forecasted the weakening role of a sole agent, replaced
by the regional representative in Singapore and Malaysia in 1982 and sold the
entire group to publicly listed Haw Par International in Singapore later that
year. Sales increased to US$7m and net profit was US$2m when the group was sold.
HUTCHISON INTERNATIONAL LTD - A.S. WATSON & CO LTD 1970-1976
Chief Executive Officer
A.S Watson & Co Ltd was established in 1841 and was the
largest subsidiary within the Hutchison Whampoa Group, dependent on old fashioned
soft drink and medical product business. Watson's is now the foundation of the
important retail, food manufacturing and distribution arm of Hutchison Whampoa.
In 1971 Hutchison Properties Limited spun off as a separate public listed company.
- Implemented major diversification programs in Hong Kong
and Southeast Asia.
- Established the Park'N Shop supermarket chain, expanded
the drugstore side into "Watson's the Chemist" and "Watson Supa Store" chain of
stores. Acquired and expanded a toy retailer "Peter Pan" which rendered Watson's
as the No 1 group of chains in Hong Kong with over 300 outlets by the end of 1989.
- Expanded and modernised the food and beverage side by establishing
their own brand "Mountain Cream" and "Olympic" hard and soft ice cream. Launched
"Crystal Springs" water, "Mr Juicy" fresh fruit juices and the switch to cans
from bottled "Watsons" soft drinks and mixers. Secured the "Sunkist" franchise.
- Undertook property development of the under-utilised factory
sites at North Point (now Watson's Estate), Kowloon and Tsuen Wan. Developed new
properties in Kwai Chung and Shatin (now Watson House, the Headquarters of the
Watson Group) in Hong Kong and Penang in Malaysia, developed for relocation of
manufacturing capacity and external letting.
- Internationally acquired control of a public company in
Thailand, White and Company Limited and Maclaine Watson in Singapore and Malaysia.
- Developed the Company's Liquor division into the more prestigious
"Watson's the Wine Merchants" - now renamed "Remy Nicholas" - with such brand
names as Remy Martin which is the market leader, Dewars, Campari and Alexis Lichine.
Negotiated the participation of Remy Martin in the equity of this company which
is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Remy Martin.
HUTCHISON PROPERTIES LIMITED
Director
Increased sales from US$7.5m to US$31.2m between 1971 to
1976. Profits gradually grew during the reengineering period to US$3.1m. During
the ensuring 4 years, sales more than doubled to US$68m and profits tripled to
US$10m. When Hutchison Whampoa bought out the minorities in 1981, the US$2.75
per share offered showed shareholders an immediate premium of 53% on the pre-acquisition
market price.
ROBERTSON, WILSON& COMPANY LIMITED 1960-1969
Managing Director
- Identified and successfully negotiated the acquisition
of this company for the Hutchison Group. Acquired 15% of the equity which was
held until the company was sold to Haw Par in 1982. Annual turnover increased
from US$300 000 to US$5m during this period.
- Secured advantageous manufacturing and marketing arrangements
with Tootal Thread, Horlicks, Beechams, Smith and Nephew, General Foods, Beartrice,
Vicks and Trebor.
DENNIS HAZELL & COMPANY LIMITED 1953-1960
Sales Director, Agency and Distribution Business
Distributed business for Slazenger, Penfold sports goods,
Chad Valley, Matchbox boys, Ferrodo and Wilmot Breedem vehicle parts and other
sundry lines throughout Southeast Asia by travelling extensively in the region.
JARDINE MATHESON & COMPANY LIMITED 1948-1953 Management Trainee á Involved in
a number of departments, shipping, import and export and became a divisional manager
by the age of 21.
